TOOLS THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE

We've Been There

All of our products are designed out of experience, not in a lab. Alon and his family have walked in your shoes, literally! We are deeply familiar with what you need when you're recovering from a stroke.

Better Together

AlonTree equipment is modular in its design. You can combine elements to get just the support you need. Or combine several pieces of equipment to add interest and enhance your workout.

Affordable

Our low-tech approach means you get affordable and effective equipment. We strive to fill the gap in recovery left by the limits of insurance, Medicare payouts, and out-of-pocket expenses for rehabilitation.

Sustainable

We are dedicated to building a company that's good for our community and for our environment. Sustainability is an important factor in our selection of materials and partners. As we scale up, we'll be looking for even more ways to source responsibly.

Meet Alon

In Hebrew, Alon means "oak." Indeed, Alon Kaplan is a force of nature.

More than a decade ago, he had a massive stroke, which left him in a vegetative state. With rehabilitation equipment of his own design, he taught himself to walk, talk, and live a full life again. He founded AlonTree to share his designs with the world.

Consider the Possible

Alon and his team create equipment with neuroplasticity in mind. Healthy brain tissue can be taught to do the things once controlled by damaged brain cells.

The brain and the body can heal themselves given the right encouragement, the right exercise, and the right equipment.

Work & Play

Our equipment is designed to be fun and functional. Rehabilitation is hard work, but it doesn't always have to be grueling. Who says work can't be fun?

The artists on our design team know comfort, beauty, and playfulness are key to creating products you'll enjoy using for your stroke recovery.

Alon Kaplan – I had a Stroke

By Alon Kaplan | 10:35 am |

Six years ago, I had a car accident. My seat belt ruptured my artery. And a blood clot went up the artery into my brain. A couple of months after that, I had a stroke. The doctors put me in a medical coma. When I came out of the coma I couldn’t remember my name.…

That’s When I Decided to Invent My Own Stroke Prototypes

Neuroplasticity

By Alon Kaplan | 3:29 pm

Neuroplasticity, also known as brain plasticity, is an umbrella term that encompasses both synaptic plasticity and non-synaptic plasticity It refers to changes in neural pathways and synapses due to changes in behavior, environment, neural processes, thinking, and emotions – as well as to changes resulting from bodily injury.[1] The concept of neuroplasticity has replaced the…

Fisher Price People

By Alon Kaplan | 10:37 am |

Years ago, my occupational therapists would say I was using my affected arm and hand during my therapy sessions. However, my therapists were actually using facilitated communication to help me use my affected arm and hand. Medicare insurance paid for a S****Retch. What a disappointment!  My unaffected hand did 99.99% of the work with the…

How I came to love my damaged brain

By Alon Kaplan | 4:01 pm |

My pre-Stroke tragedy On a Thursday afternoon, August 14 2008, a young woman on hercellphone ran a stop sign and smashed her blue car into the driver’sside of my white minivan. My three daughters were secured in their carseats in the back. All that I had to secure me during the crash was afaulty seat…

Neuroplasticity

By Alon Kaplan | 5:26 pm |

In 2008, I had a catastrophic massive stroke in the left hemisphere of my brain due to a car accident. I was 40 years old but  I couldn’t talk, write, or access my short-term memory.  I couldn’t use the right side of my body. My damaged brain’s map couldn’t access the muscle groups in my…

What is a “plateau” of your stroke recovery?

By Alon Kaplan | 2:09 pm |

“At six months out from a stroke, you don’t expect to see any further recovery.” “Oftentimes there is rapid recovery during the first three months, but then progress slows down. This eventually leads to a dreaded ‘plateau’ in recovery after about six months.” “Plateau” is an expression frequently used in relation to decisions to discharge…

Reflections through poetry

By Alon Kaplan | 6:02 pm |

These selected poems were written after my car accident and stroke 9/22/2008 When you told me that you loved him, You turned on a particle accelerator and blew my atoms to bits. I did not know what was inside; thank you for giving me back to myself. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I love the way your face shines…

Jumping Far

By Alon Kaplan | 7:42 pm |

Sept 21, 2014:   Today, I hesitate before I climb my stairs to go to the bathroom because not long before, I used to be a crippler, and I used to be scared of the staircase wearing my brace and my shoes.  Now, I pump out my barefoot going up the stairs and not touching my…

Getting Hit By a Stroke vs. Falling Down The Stairs

By Alon Kaplan | 3:50 pm |

Primo Levi said, once, if a nontoxic gas appears in your room, big or, small, the gas is invasive. It seems your suffering is like a gas filtering around your room. Two week ago, I fell down the stairs and fractured my upper ulna. What is the ulna? It’s the minor forearm bone. I felt…

I Am a New World Monkey

By Alon Kaplan | 7:04 pm |

My baby fingers grasp my fisher price animals. A New World monkey doesn’t use her thumbs.  Unlike humans and most Old World monkeys, their thumbs are not opposable. A human baby would eat from her fingers. The thumbs show up after she mastered eating with her fingers. New world monkeys Thumb orientation lies in line…

Our Seamstresses’ Goddess

By Fiona Hollowell | 9:44 pm |

Now, after my touring twenties, I’ve finally come to a place in my career that I feel happy. My job is flexible, technical, creative and fun. I love what I do. I make patterns and prototypes and I manage the sewing production for AlonTree- a company based out of Asheville NC. While Asheville is not…

I have climbed a mountain

By Alon Kaplan | 6:16 pm |

I have climbed a mountain. For someone like me who has survived a stroke, this has meant stepping from “stroke victim”, climbing to “stroke survivor”, and, finally, reaching the summit at “stroke warrior”.  My life post-stroke has been an adventurous journey. I have had to shed my victimhood, say goodbye to my doctors, therapists, and…

The Angel Didn’t Know She Has Wings!

By Alon Kaplan | 12:21 pm |

And, you said, “What? I am NOT an angel.” “But, you are!” “No,” you said, unsure of what I’m saying to you. “Look at the wings!” I said. “What do you mean by ‘wings’?” you said, taking backwards steps. “Those wings that are growing from upper back,” I said gesturing to your feathery wings. “You…

I don’t need any pity

By Alon Kaplan | 7:17 pm |

When I woke up from my coma, which lasted 6 days, I didn’t need any pity. Sure, I was clueless about my catastrophic massive stroke. However, I didn’t know who I was. I mean. Literally. Who am I? I didn’t know who I am. I didn’t know what place this hospital room was. I didn’t…
