TOOLS THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE

We've Been There

All of our products are designed out of experience, not in a lab. Alon and his family have walked in your shoes, literally! We are deeply familiar with what you need when you're recovering from a stroke.

Better Together

AlonTree equipment is modular in its design. You can combine elements to get just the support you need. Or combine several pieces of equipment to add interest and enhance your workout.

Affordable

Our low-tech approach means you get affordable and effective equipment. We strive to fill the gap in recovery left by the limits of insurance, Medicare payouts, and out-of-pocket expenses for rehabilitation.

Sustainable

We are dedicated to building a company that's good for our community and for our environment. Sustainability is an important factor in our selection of materials and partners. As we scale up, we'll be looking for even more ways to source responsibly.

Meet Alon

In Hebrew, Alon means "oak." Indeed, Alon Kaplan is a force of nature.

More than a decade ago, he had a massive stroke, which left him in a vegetative state. With rehabilitation equipment of his own design, he taught himself to walk, talk, and live a full life again. He founded AlonTree to share his designs with the world.

Consider the Possible

Alon and his team create equipment with neuroplasticity in mind. Healthy brain tissue can be taught to do the things once controlled by damaged brain cells.

The brain and the body can heal themselves given the right encouragement, the right exercise, and the right equipment.

Work & Play

Our equipment is designed to be fun and functional. Rehabilitation is hard work, but it doesn't always have to be grueling. Who says work can't be fun?

The artists on our design team know comfort, beauty, and playfulness are key to creating products you'll enjoy using for your stroke recovery.

AlonAcorn: A Modern Flint Stone

By Alon Kaplan | 12:18 pm |

AlonAcorn comes across as a flint stone which our hands had been carrying 600,000 years ago. The AlonAcorn is a hand sized piece of foam with deep finger indentations. To use, simply secure it with velcro straps, and then crawl on the floor or use it during various yoga postures, such as downward facing dog.…

Why emojis are so important

By Alon Kaplan | 1:29 pm |

Americans love my Euro sounding accent. I am an anglophone who grew up in an English speaking neighborhood of Montreal and I have South African English parents. I have Foreign Accent Syndrome. I couldn’t speak after my massive stroke in 2008. Finally, around 2012, thanks to my speech therapy and the SpeakIt! iPhone app, my…

I Am a New World Monkey

By Alon Kaplan | 7:04 pm |

My baby fingers grasp my fisher price animals. A New World monkey doesn’t use her thumbs.  Unlike humans and most Old World monkeys, their thumbs are not opposable. A human baby would eat from her fingers. The thumbs show up after she mastered eating with her fingers. New world monkeys Thumb orientation lies in line…

The child with cerebral palsy and me

By Alon Kaplan | 5:24 pm |

On Tuesday, I was sitting inside the San Antonio airport terminal. A little girl with cerebral palsy walked by with her family. She was pushing her four-wheeled posture control walker* as she crossed the aisle in the terminal. The little girl made a beeline right towards me and put her arms around me. She hugged…

Baby Steps

By Alon Kaplan | 7:03 pm |

Baby steps are measured in months and years. Mademoiselle Violin decided she was going to pick up the violin and, what-the-heck, play it. What’s transcribed in her YouTube video is magical and shows hard work (conquers all!). I have been doing ecstatic dance for some time now.  Recently, a guy from my ecstatic dance came…

3 Different Ways to Tell if Your Arm is Working

By Alon Kaplan | 6:29 pm |

My superior longitudinal fasciculus in my left brain had this trouble: it couldn’t function because my blood clot exploded right in its face. Imagine this: a grenade going boom in a bunker. My superior longitudinal fasciculus was the superhighway of my working memories, my short term memories, my entire language system, my grammatical system, my…

Two Months Before I Slipped Into a Coma

By Alon Kaplan | 9:10 pm |

In October, 2008, about two months before my coma, I wrote this letter to my old friend.     I looked at your photos… you look so happy! Your eyes are on fire. It brought me back to the time you took me to dinner in Boston for my birthday and we spoke about me becoming…

Before and after my stroke

By Alon Kaplan | 11:18 pm |

Before I had the stroke, I cleaned, gardened, cooked, and did the laundry. I played with my daughters, nursed them back to health when they were sick, took them to school in the morning, and picked them up from school in the afternoon.  I was the “assistant director” for my daughters; always at my daughters’…

And, it’s Gettin’ Better All the Time!

By Alon Kaplan | 11:38 am |

I thought you will intrigue by my orally sentence structure. Last December, I printed out the alphabet suffix pages. Wherever I sit down for breakfast, I usually take three or six big words. I study them by orally saying them 3 times with my SpeakIt! or, not. It’s changed my ability to connect my thoughts…

7 “Facts” About The Brain That Are Not True

By Alon Kaplan | 4:50 pm |

Stroke

By Alon Kaplan | 4:12 pm

Your brain is a command center issuing commands to the army (your body). Imagine that some terrorists blew out one room, maybe three, with a grenade. Now imagine those “terrorists” are the blood clot. The “grenade” is the damage done by the blood clot to your host of neuron cells. No one has an answer…

Jumping Far

By Alon Kaplan | 7:42 pm |

Sept 21, 2014:   Today, I hesitate before I climb my stairs to go to the bathroom because not long before, I used to be a crippler, and I used to be scared of the staircase wearing my brace and my shoes.  Now, I pump out my barefoot going up the stairs and not touching my…

I Arrived in Asheville

By Alon Kaplan | 9:38 pm |

Asheville is the #8 best place to live: Please don’t move here. Asheville was recently cited on the Froddor Guide as the 8th best place in America to live (out of 331 municipalities.) The guide cited affordable housing, good public schools, natural beauty and a good location for e-commerce businesses. And yet, I urge you…
